Telescope Basics

Telescopes come in two different types which are called Reflectors and Refractors.

A reflecting telescope works well for viewing galaxies and stars since they allow the observer to see sharp images better.  They are generally also less expensive than a comparable refractor telescope since they typically only have just one surface which helps to focus the light in addition to a series of polished mirrors.

Refracting telescopes are best used to view the planets and the moon. While there are inexpensive refractors, good ones can be quite expensive as compared to a reflecting telescope. The configuration of a refracting telescope is that of the form of a long tube which has an eyepiece on one end and a large lens at the other end.

As for a base, you just need a solid, sturdy, base. You don’t need motors to drive the telescope unless you plan on doing some  astrophotography. You will find that after a bit of playing with it that you will be able to guide your telescope by hand in order to place it where you want to look.  Make sure your tripod is mounts the telescope well and is placed in a good and level position. You don’t want your telescope assembly falling over and damaging your telescope in various ways.

Finderscopes are desirable to have on your telescope as well.  This is a smaller refractor telescope that is mounted next to the eyepiece.  This small, low powered, telescope will make finding the specific stellar body easier.

You should try out different telescopes to see what works best for you.  Should you want to try out a telescope before you invest a lot of money into one you should consider purchasing a used telescope of the type that you want to use.
